Joists, more commonly known as I-joists, are long parallel beams that can be made from solid dimensional lumber or engineered wood. Wood I-joists get their name from their cross section that looks like the capital letter I. They are made up of a top and bottom flange separated by a vertical web. The flanges can be made from lumber or engineered wood. The flanges are grooved on one side and the web is usually OSB or in some cases plywood. The webs and flanges are assembled with a water-resistant glue. The I-joists are designed to carry heavy loads over long distances. The I-joist is used for floor and roof joists, and roof rafters in both residential and commercial construction. The advantage of the I-joist is they will not bow, crown, twist, cup check or split in contrast to a dimensional lumber.
Common depths are 9-1/2", 11-7/8", 14" and 16" with flange widths varying from 1-1/2" to 3-1/2". Long lengths are readily available
intumescence

The Flame Safe fire retardant I-joists are fire treated with Flame Safe proprietary high intumescent flame retardant treatment method. When exposed to high heat or fire the surface of the I-joist swells, forming a carbon char (intumescent action) that protects the I-joist substrate from the fire thereby insulating and increasing the fire endurance of the I-joist and it's structural attributes.
